I am a bit confused about the ~David Bowie is a paedophile~ stuff?? Like I don’t think he should have had sex w that girl obviously he was an adult and should have known it wasn’t a good idea but in the interview which everyone is citing, she is totally ok with it and doesn’t consider it to be rape or anything, and shouldn’t she be the one we are listening to? I am not defending him I just hate when we ignore women’s autonomy to own their own experiences, if she doesn’t consider it a harmful experience then why are we shouting about it, she is the only one who can decide how to feel about her own experiences right? And there’s no other known cases, is there?
Issy, don’t you know some people on tumblr are the bearers of truth and they know better than you or anyone else? If they say David Bowie was a paedo and a racist then he was one and you shouldn’t argue with the tumblr oracles.

tumblr didn’t make it up. nobody is arguing with the facts. what tumblr is doing is being preachy and shitting all over people’s genuine grief. I don’t think anyone who knows the story would argue that it was a bad decision and definitely not the right thing to have done, but telling a whole load of people their grief is wrong and they’re bad people is just as wrong.
and there’s still no evidence anywhere that he’s a racist.
i don’t know who you are following but tumblr isn’t a hive mind. it’s a very large community, and probably only a very small percentage are actively harassing ppl who are mourning david bowie.
as for this post you’ve reblogged – with your response it feels like you’re reblogging it because it somehow excuses or vindicates him for having sex with a 13-year-old girl simply because she’s not experiencing any trauma from it after the fact. this isn’t the kind of thing you can throw back at tumblr and say “so there” because whether or not she was okay with it changes maybe what her internal life is like but nothing about how wrong it is for an adult man to have sex with a 13-year-old child. it is always wrong. a 13-year-old child does not have agency when an adult man (esp one they idolize) tells them to have sex with them. it’s up to them to decide how it affected them or want to deal with it, but it does not make his actions remotely defensible.
like, it’s okay to like someone’s music but, musicians are often flawed individuals, and, on occasion, really probably rapists. it’s okay to be very affected by somebody’s professional body of work and to admire somebody for their skill at making music but now that this person is dead, social media is being absolutely inundated with posts glorifying this acknowledged child rapist in places where survivors of csa/ppl who are triggered by csa can see them. i think it’s important to keep all of this in perspective. if you like david bowie’s work then luckily for you, it’s still around.
I never said what he did was justifiable or acceptable. let’s get this completely clear – I do not think him having sex with a 13 year old, no matter whether she said she wanted to or not, was right.
pretty much any artist has done something awful at some point in their life. and sure, these things deserve to be brought up and talked about. however, an artist can be an awful person and still create meaningful art. what I am saying is there is an entire sub-community of tumblr users who aren’t just bringing it up in a civil manner, but are being very offensive to people whose grief is real. I don’t have to tell you how powerful music can be. It should be no surprise that an artist whose career spanned nearly 50 years would have impacted a great number of people. the people who mourn him deserve just as much respect.
again, important things need to be brought up and talked about. but what a lot of those tumblr users are doing is not just bringing it up and talking about it. they are being callous and disrespectful to people who have a very real feeling of loss. they deserve as much respect as anyone else.

to everyone who’s taking the occasion of David Bowie’s death to get on their own personal soapbox and shit on people’s grief: take a good look in the mirror. sift through your record collection and your itunes and spotify playlists. have a good hard think about how you would react if someone you deeply admire died.
then quit being a preachy judgmental asshole and let people grieve.
